In 1961, in October, the German-Turkish recruitment agreement was signed. The so-called Turkish "guest workers" came - and brought along their music. Unheard by their German fellow citizens, they sang of wanderlust, of arriving, of love and of their working life, danced to their music at celebrations.
Deutschlandlieder/Almanya Türküleri presents a dozen or so pieces of music selected from different decades and genres in one concert: Under the musical direction of Nedim Hazar, frontman of the band Yarinistan, the original soloists interpret their songs in person for most of the pieces.
Live on stage with the most important protagonists from then and now: from hip-hopper Eko Fresh (today) to his father Nedim Hazar (80s) and Ata Canani (70s) to the living legend Metin Türköz (60s), the then young bard of the first immigrant generation who now lives in a retirement home and revives his songs live on stage once again, as in "Buena Vista Social Club". Another highlight: the exceptional Sicilian singer Etta Scollo will sing Yüksel Özkasap's greatest hit, the "Nightingale of Cologne"(70s), in addition to immigrant songs from Italy.
The immigrant stars are accompanied by a rousing live band: 11 musicians with parents from 15 countries provide a groove that reconciles oriental rhythms with European classical music, American rock and Balkan blues, Italian temperament and German lyrics in a great celebration of music and mixes them into something that is more than just the sum of its parts: An unforgettable evening that carries on the "mantle of history"(Helmut Kohl, former German Chancellor).
"Deutschlandlieder" on the 60th anniversary of the German-Turkish recruitment agreement - not in a museum, but live on stage. History is rocked: vital, rousing, groovy! This evening awakens anticipation for the next 60 years!
The premiere concert will take place on Saturday, October 23, 8 p.m. at Zeche Zollverein, Essen.
