No doubt 24th of February made its way into history books. With Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, not only the continent’s geopolitics but also the Union’s perspectives when it comes to the future of integration has changed dramatically. The EU’s response to Russia’s invasion has been surprisingly swift and united. Several measures have been taken in response to Russia’s war of aggression, including drastic economic and diplomatic sanctions, as well as military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine. We also witnessed an important shift in member states’ security and defense policy, most notably in Germany and Denmark.
Currently, EU leaders discuss the next steps, such as independence from Russian energy supplies, a “Recovery Fund 2.0” as well as the question of enlargement. Are we likely to see further steps towards integration, or was what we have witnessed a swift one-off response? Most importantly, what long-term impact will the war in Ukraine have on the future of European integration – will we be fragmented, differentiated or united?
To discuss these questions, Stiftung Mercator and Connecting Europe cordially invite you to this roundtable discussion. The event will be followed by a reception for the Mercator Alumni Brussels community.
