European cohesion through the pandemic: The state of play one year into COVID-19

The COVID-19 crisis has put European cohesion to the test. In Spring 2020, EU member states went their own ways by closing borders, keeping their medical equipment for themselves and not coordinating enough with their European counterparts. Since then, there has been significant progress, most notably on the economic recovery, but also in terms of healthcare coordination. As the COVID-19 crisis is far from over, its long-term impact on European cohesion and unity remains uncertain.

This EPC Policy Dialogue will seek to address a number of questions: What is the state of European cohesion one year after COVID-19? What weaknesses did the crisis throw up and what new challenges have emerged? What role can the Portuguese Council Presidency play to improve European cohesion in 2021? The discussion will draw on the latest findings of the ECFR’s EU Cohesion Monitor.
