The first onsite alumni meeting in a long time took place at the end of March. A group of Mercator alumni visited the current exhibition "A Fragile Paradise" in the industrial monument Gasometer Oberhausen
Mercator Alumni Meet-Up Ruhr | Gasometer Oberhausen | 31.03.2022
Since October 2021, the exhibition has attracted more than 250,000 visitors. The exhibition and guide showed our group how unique, beautiful and at the same time fragile our blue planet is in its cosmic orbits. Change has always been the constant of this "fragile paradise". But the additional change that we humans "inflict" on the planet also endangers our habitat. Both dimensions are presented in the exhibition in concise large-format images and video sequences: natural and man-made change! Other highlights of the exhibition were the insights into committed projects for dealing with climate change and the monocentric earth sculpture inside the Gasometer, onto which high-resolution satellite images of the earth are projected. A real recommendation to visit!
After the visit, we joined for dinner on the nearby Centro promenade. Over good food and drinks, the participants were able to discuss the exhibition and of course many other topics and make contacts across programme and age boundaries. Among others, Mercator alumni from science and junior research programmes as well as the staff of Stiftung Mercator and its partner companies took part. A great afternoon and evening that whetted the appetite for more alumni events in the near future!
